Technical Themes

UK-HyRES brings together leading researchers to tackle the key technological challenges of a hydrogen-based energy system. Our technical themes span hydrogen and alternative fuel production, storage, integration, and end use, supporting innovation across the entire value chain. These focus areas are critical to accelerating the development and deployment of low-carbon fuels at scale.

Production

Following important advances in applying exsolution catalysts to high-temperature solid oxide electrolysis, here we seek to apply this to low-temperature electrolysis.

Storage & Distribution

This five-year core research project, which started on 1 June 2023 at the University of Bath, involves the discovery, identification/selection, design, modelling and characterisation of novel nanoporous materials and composites as hydrogen storage media in future aircraft.

End of Use

This five-year core research project, which started on 1 June 2023 at the University of Warwick, involves the discovery, identification/selection, design, modelling and characterisation of novel electro-catalysts for nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) to be used as a cathode for efficient synthesis of ammonia through an electrochemical synthesis process.

Alternative Liquid Fuels

This five-year core research project, which started on 1 June 2023 at the University of Warwick, involves the discovery, identification/selection, design, modelling and characterisation of novel electro-catalysts for nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) to be used as a cathode for efficient synthesis of ammonia through an electrochemical synthesis process.
