Fellowship Spotlight
This project will develop innovative sensing technologies to improve the monitoring, management and safety of liquid hydrogen systems, contributing to safer hydrogen storage and distribution while supporting environmental sustainability.
George is a researcher at the University of Bath with a background in polymer chemistry, nanomaterials engineering and solid-state hydrogen storage. He is passionate about advancing sustainable solutions and addressing the fundamental research challenges needed to unlock hydrogen-powered aircraft, accelerating the transition of the UK’s aerospace sector to Net Zero.
“Investigating the next generation of liquid hydrogen storage materials: CyroSpect is exploring novel materials and structures to deliver sustainable aviation, including this nanoporous polymer, just 8 g of which has the surface area of a football pitch!
“In collaboration with GKN Aerospace, the National Physical Laboratory, IAAPs and the University of Bath, CryoSpect aims to close a critical safety and operational gap in existing liquid hydrogen infrastructure by establishing a new sensing platform capable of monitoring the liquid-vapour phase boundary and providing early detection and capture of gas ingress into the vacuum layer, improving safety and efficiency and facilitating the creation of advanced models towards certification.

For the first time in my career, I have had the opportunity to identify a bottleneck and apply my skillset to developing a unique solution to it, and with the backing of established researchers and industrial partners in the field. This Fellowship will allow me to pursue an independent research direction which not only excites and interests me, but could lead to real-world impacts, particularly facilitated by the Hub’s national network of researchers, industrialists and policy-makers.
