Research that helps turn potential into informed choices
Hydrogen and alternative liquid fuels are already making an important contribution to a lower-carbon future, particularly in sectors where direct electrification is difficult. However, there are still challenges to be addressed to get to large-scale deployment and decisions about where these fuels belong must be grounded in evidence: how well they perform, what they cost, the resources and infrastructure they require, how safely they can be deployed and whether they deliver genuine environmental and social value.
UK-HyRES brings researchers together across the hydrogen value chain to answer those connected questions and the challenges that still need to be addressed. By combining science and engineering with economic, environmental, social and safety expertise, the programme helps build a clearer picture of where hydrogen adds value, where trade-offs need to be managed and where other options may be better suited.
