Technical performance alone does not determine whether hydrogen or an alternative fuel is commercially viable as part of a low carbon energy system. A credible pathway must also be economically viable, environmentally beneficial, socially legitimate and safe. The four Cross-Cutting Themes, Economic, Environmental, Social and Safety, work alongside the technical research from the start, testing assumptions, comparing options and identifying costs, impacts or risks that might otherwise be missed.
